letter scale type R | This letter scale also is made by J.S. Velthoen & Zn, the Netherlands. This postal scale is especially for weighing letters. The tolerance values of the lower weight limits can be set very quickly on this letter scale by moving the large weight to the proper groove. These values are 20,3 grams and 50,5 grams. The design of this scale dates already from 1954. The scales are numbered. The year of making is engraved in the plate at the front. This specimen dates from 1969 and is number 740. A restriction in Dutch: "uitsluitend bestemd voor weging van poststukken" is engraved on this plate as well. The | back of scale |
translation: "strictly to be used for weighing postal articles". A characteristic feature of this scale is that the beam of the unloaded scale is in equilibrium. The scale is leveled by rotating the two leveling screws. The air bubble in the round spirit-level is centered in the inner circle of the glass. The scale has fine tuning means at the beam for zero setting. Special is the oil damper. The scale is dull grey and ugly. By the double ball bearings at the main axis and the pivot of the pan, a sufficiently accurate scale was designed. A logo of the PTT is missing on this specimen. The fixed foot contains a lead filled bowl. These letter scales were verified individually. And legally stamped with a crown and with the number of the weights and measures office in the lead of this fixed foot. Below some more pictures of this postal scale.
