letter scale | The adjustment of the spring in this spring-type postal scale was granted a US-patent with the number 2,564,361. With the title "Spring scale adjustment means" the patent was applied for already in April 30, 1948 by Stan B. Hansen of the Hanson Scale Company, Chicago Ill. The patent was granted not sooner than August 14, 1951. Maybe the date on the scale, October 1, 1953, is the date of manufacturing. The postal rates on this scale were effective before this date. The postal rates on this scale show a very special category: seeds, plants and books and catalogs of 24 and more pages! Also this letter scale has postal rates divided in zones. The chart has a stripe per ounce. The lower text line at the chart has become almost unreadable due to corrosion. It reads: "Not legal for trade".
