scale and opener with fancy packing
The firm Brown & Bigelow, Saint Paul, Minnesota, U.S.A. produces promotional products already since circa 1925 with the trademark "Remembrance Advertising". This combination of letter opener and letter scale has the maker's abbreviation, B&B, together with the mark Remembrance and some address data in very small printing molded into the handle. The name Griffiths-Fox Chapel is printed on the handle in large golden characters. This organization applied this opener/scale as an appreciation gift. The letter scale is of the rocker type. When the letter is heavier then the value adjusted with the blade, The end of the handle rocks down to the surface. The letter scale can be adjusted to several postal limit values by shifting the blade: at ½ ounce when fully closed; 1 oz, 1½ oz. and 2 oz. The ½ oz. is for foreign mail, according to the text on the packing. The letter clip is also made shiftable. At the packing are instructions for use and two pictographs.
