SAV-A-STAMP letter scale | These SAV-A-STAMP letter scales weigh up to 4 ounces. They are the successors of the SAV-A-STAMP by Thorne-Foster Inc. The postal rates are at the frontal side of the scale. The back surface is kept totally bare. The scale has the maker's name: A. Browne Co. and the US-patent number 2,060,064. The design is based on the American patent with number 2,060,064. It was granted on November 10, 1936 to John C. Fryer. The application was already made on April 14 1933. In the original design a long edge could be used as a 4 inch ruler. The text of the patent mentions a third function of the design: a paper weight. The seven figures of the patent show scales that differ on many details: other letter clips, other scale ranges, differently shaped indicators, and other shapes of holders. The postal rate of 3c for a letter was valid | SAV-A-STAMP a bit more recent |
in the period 1932-1958, the 8c for airmail was valid from 1944 till 1946. So, this scale dates from the period 1944-1946. The SAV-A-STAMP shown above at the right, was also made by A. Browne Co. and is of a more recent date. The layout of the printing is altered a bit, and the company moved to another address. The letter rate of 5c indicates the period 1963-1968. These letter scales with white text on a black background are much better readable compared to the earlier version made by Thorne-Foster Inc. Below some more pictures of these letter scales.
