This little letter scale was sold by The Rexall Store at the Stationery Department. The Rexall has a mechanism with a simple leaf spring. The range of the scale is 8 ounces. The postal rates for local, first class and air mail are given on the chart next to the weight. The letter rate of 2c dates from the period 1932-1958. The Air mail rate is from the period 1934-1944 but also from the period 1949-1955. Therefore the scale dates from the period 1934-1955. Perhaps on the basis of information about the local rates a better date determination could be made. The design looks to be based totally on the letter scale of Harry T. Kingsbury. The Kingsbury MfG. Company from Keene, New Hampshire made a somewhat taller specimen of this design: 12 ounces instead of 8 ounces. The design is protected by American patents. The patent numbers are 2,036,636 and 2,036.637. Both patents date April 7 1936. In details the scales differ from the designs and figures of the patents. A zero adjusting means isn't realized in this Rexall. Below some more pictures of this nice small letter scale with a height of just seven centimeters. | Rexall letter scale |
