Nouveauté letter scale | The postal rates engraved in the plate of this little letter scale were valid in the German Empire between 1875 and 1900. The 50 grams chart has a stripe for each gram. This letter scale has an own name: Nouveauté. Engraved in the arm of the pendulum is GESETZLISH GESCHÜTZT. I think it should have been gesetzlich, but maybe it is old-German. The design with the base folded out of one piece of material, looks appealing. It would have been even better if also the standard was made as a part of this piece of material. Now, it's a seperate part, attached to the base by 2 little round headed rivets. The scale is almost completely made of brass. The axis are steel. The plate and the chart are tin. This little letter scale exists also with a plate on which the Dutch postal | back of the scale |
rates are engraved. In Meten & Wegen of December 1997 R.J. Kok shows a specimen of this kind on page 2374. The engraved postal rates were valid in the short period of 1892 - 1907. Below some more pictures of this letter scale.
