Utility No. 10 B letter scale | This small letter scale was made by Universal Utilities Co., 50 Pine St., New York U.S.A. The model is indicated with No. 10 B and on the bottom of the box is a green sticker with the name UTILITY POSTAL SCALE. At one side of the lever are the values in ounces. This chart goes up to 8 ounces. To give the counterweight sphere a distinct position, lowerings are made at the lever. The lowerings of the half ounces are not as deep as the others. The scale does not have the value zero. It's impossible to put the scale in equilibrium with just the counterweight sphere. The other side of the lever shows the postal rates for letters and papers. The postal rate for letters is 2c per ounce. This was valid in the period Juli 1 1885 - November 3 1917, and once again from July 1 1919 till |
July 6 1932. The postal rate for papers was 1c per 4 ounces. I don't know in which period this was valid. The parts are magnetic. Below some more pictures of this letter scale.
