Ph.J. Maul letter scale | This letter scale with a capacity of 50 grams is an old one, it was made by Philipp Jakob Maul. The first logo is placed at the head of the leveling screw. This mark was protected from June 1888 till June 1898. The top plate has the postal rates of Germany, Austria and Hungary at the left side. The postal rates for sending letters to countries of the World Postal Treaty are at the right side. At the vertical brass strip is engraved GES.GESCH. This is a German abbreviation meaning Protected by Law. The frame is made of cast iron. The mechanism is mounted by a simple screw-thread end and a flat brass nut. This frame also shows copper colored zones. Up to twenty grams each gram has its own stripe of measure. Above twenty grams a stripe per five grams is given.
