Salter pocket scale | This pocket sized little scale is of English origin, it is made by Salter. Salter is a very old firm, it was already founded in 1760. The history of Salter and many Salter weighing scales for all kind of purposes is presented in two extensive articles written by Michael Crawforth in Equilibrium, see the footnote »». The capacity of this little letter scale is eight ounces. Inside this scale two springs are mounted parallel. Crawforth states another model has even three springs. The lighter version of four ounces has one spring. According to Crawforth, also a two springs version exists. During several decades different models were produced, with and without the postal rates printed on the chart. Other versions have the postal rates at a sticker on the back of the scale housing. Several different designs of the letter clip are known. Also a | capacity eight ounces |
version with a black chart with white printing exists. The postal rate for letters of 1½ D up to 2 oz., 2 D till 4 oz., 2½ D till 6 oz. and 3 D till 8 oz. was valid from May 14 1923 till May 1 1940. This pocket scale was shown in Salter catalogs from 1930's and later. Below some more pictures of this letter scale.
