D.R.G.M. letter scale in the Birks box | This pocket letter scale came in a little box with the name and logo of Birks. I don't know if this is the original box of this letter scale. Birks has stores in Canada and in the USA. Birks was founded in 1879 and deals mainly in jewelry. The letter scale itself was made in Germany and bears the abbreviation D.R.G.M. This indicates a cheap patent was granted for the design, a Deutsches Reich Gebrauchs Muster. The scale measures in ounces, and therefore the scale was intended for the Anglo-Saxon market. The first two ounces are subdivided by quarter. Above 2 ounces there are poor readable stripes at 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 ounces. There are only figures at the values 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 12 and 16. That makes reading any easier. The house and the cap of the letter scale are not magnetic, presumably of chromed brass. The letter and the suspension ring or magnetic. | the pocket scale with cap |
