Jiffy Way egg grading scale, U.S.A. | This egg scale originates from the U.S.A.. Jiffy Way is the name under which this model became known. Benjamin Zimmer from Minneapolis, Minnesota is the designer. The patent application dates from April 8, 1938. The patent US2,205,917 was issued on June 25, 1940. In the patent, the Jiffy Way egg weigher is mounted on a metal can with an egg-illuminating lamp and a scouring pad to wipe the eggs. More information about the Jiffy Way egg graders is given in North American Egg Scales - from ABC to Zenith by Charley Amsbaugh. Several models and versions exist. This typical American egg scale has a scale on which the weight per egg and per dozen eggs is stated. This scale ranges from 18 to 30 ounces per dozen. The four American egg weight classes are also clearly on the scale. Small - Medium - Large - Extra Large. The scale has a set screw in the lower short lever. This can function as a stop to do a quicker classification in the weight classes. | back of the egg scale |
The counterweight is finely adjustable on thread. A split pin hanging in a window shows whether the scale is sufficiently horizontal. The metal Jiffy Way was made for at least sixteen different companies in the period 1938-1998. The company names were put on the scale, such as Brower Mfg Co. here. This Jiffy Way egg scale can be considered as the Jiffy I.
After that, the Jiffy Way was thoroughly redesigned and turned into an egg scale / kitchen scale, completely made of plastics: the Jiffy II. The maker / supplier is Kuhl Corporation, Flemington, New Jersey, U.S.A.
In May 2008, the Jiffy III a design made by Paul K. Boutiette, was protected with a Design Patent US D569.751. The application dates from May 2007. The Design patent has a duration of fourteen years. This well-known weighing chicken is still new for sale, among others at Kuhl Corporation.
