Oakes egg scale, U.S.A. | This egg scale comes from the U.S.A., the designer is not known to me. The maker is Oakes Manufacturing Company Incorporated from Tipton, Indiana. Lots of info about Oakes egg graders can be found in North American Egg Scales - from ABC to Zenith by Charley Amsbaugh. There are different versions and models. This model is known as a third generation Oakes egg scale, first sold in 1949. The model was sold until the end of the company in 1962. This typical American egg scale has a scale on which the weight per egg and per dozen eggs is stated. This scale ranges from 18 to 30 ounces per dozen. The four American egg weight classes are also clearly on the scale. Small - Medium - Large - Extra Large. The scale has brightly colored zones corresponding to the four weight classes. The scale has a set screw on the metal base plate. This can function as a stop to do a quicker classification in the weight classes. The counterweight is finely adjustable on thread. The position is secured with a locknut. A small bottle cork is used as a buffer for the | back of the Oakes egg scale |

counterweight. The model is very similar to an egg scale from Mascot Mfg. Co .. The main difference is that the Mascot has a round hole in the upright frame part, with a smaller round hole above and below it. A hanging split pin in the upper small hole could show whether the scale is sufficiently horizontal. This third generation Oakes has the bright colors in the weight classes, the Mascot and earlier generations of Oakes egg scales do not have this color scale.
