the paper scale
ready for use

Stored in its black box this paper scale is suited for traveling. There is no maker's name on the scale or on the storage box. The hinged box contains two parts of a suspension pole and the actual paper weigher. Moreover, one pair of templates for cutting the paper is stored in the lid. The range of this paper scale is 0 to 200 grams per square meter. The chart has a stripe of measure for each 2 grams. The pair of templates measures 7 x 7 centimeters. Determining the paper weight per square meter is a quality measurement. This is done by placing a sufficiently large piece of paper between the template sections. These template parts fit together precisely: two sharp-pointed pins of one plate fit exactly into the two holes of the other plate. Along the four sides of the template the paper is cut with a razor blade or with another sharp knife, for example a scalpel. Mind your fingers. Then one takes the tailored paper from the template and attach it onto the sharp hook of the paper scale. Again mind your fingers. Wait for the scale to rest. Now the pointer indicates the weight per square meter of the tested paper sample. A heavy paper quality (above 200 grams per square meter) can be tested by doubling up and cutting the test paper into half. Then the surface of the

the testing paper is half the surface of the larger testing paper. The values of the chart are multiplied by two in this case. The weighing range of the scale also multiplies by two, so it becomes 400 grams per square meter. The unit of measure g/qm means grams per quadratmeter, This unit of measure was replaced by g/m2 in Germany on January 1, 1975. Most probably this paper scale was intended for the German speaking market, also seen the German text on the paper scale: 'bei Anhang 7cm x 7cm'. This is -roughly translated- 'provided that paper sized 7 x 7 cm is suspended'. Presumably, this paper scale was made in Germany.Below some more pictures of this paper scale.
