Ph.J. Maul letter scale | This letter scale has the scale for grams in red and the scales for German postal rates (in Pfennig) inland and abroad in black. Besides the postal rates for letters also the postal rates for printed matter are specified in the enamel. These rates were valid from January 1, 1875 until August 1,1916 in the German Empire. As you can see these rates were also valid in Austria and Hungary. The M logo of Philipp Jakob Maul is present at the counterweight. This logo was introduced in 1909. Therefore this letter scale is from the period 1909 - 1916. It appears that the letter scale is depicted and described in the Maul catalogs of 1909 and 1912. Besides the black lacquered version with matted brass, also a fine polished nickel-plated version was made. Moreover, at an additional charge you could buy a W-shaped top plate that is more suitable for weighing cylindrical material.
The letter scale is recommended for office use. The scale has a steel bearing for the main axis. The foot has holes to enable fixating to the surface by means of screws. The | rear of the scale |
leveling screw is equipped with a lock nut to avoid awkward leveling every time. On the top plate is printed underneath the postal rates information, also a totally unnecessary clarification of the enamel scale. The weighing range is 500 grams.
