This COLUMBUS is the largest bilateral scale of Philipp Jakob Maul. The parcel scale is called a novelty in the catalogs of Maul from around 1910. The scale design is based on patent DE167192 from 1904 and especially on patent DE184690 from 1907 which is complementary on patent DE167192. These patents are granted to Automat, Aktien Gesellschaft, Berlin. At this Columbus Bilateral is a patent drawing of DE167192.
The weighing capacity is 10 kilograms, this is specified on the upper scale. The lower scale has a maximum of 2 kilograms. The scale shown here was first dismantled and then thoroughly renovated by de-rusting the parts and then re-painting them. Below there are some detailed pictures to illustrate this. At the bottom of the page are some pictures of the original purchase state of this large Columbus parcel scale. I doubt if these brass scales are original parts of this parcel scale. This heavy scale is 29 centimeters high. For comparison is also shown below the smallest Columbus letter scale, which is 10 inches high.
