letter scale with stand | This is a special letter scale: a Salter's letter balance complete with an original stand. This stand is already depicted in the Salter catalog of 1898. In the catalogs of 1924 and of 1928 and later years the stand is no longer available. This letter balance weighs in grammes, and will be made for a French speaking market. France seems likely. The scale of 100 grammes has a stripe of measure per 5 grammes. Very special is the separate indication of 7½ grammes, 12½ grammes and 22½ grammes. A search in postal rates resulted in this information: during the period 1833 - 1875 a Postal Union existed for mail between Great Britain and France in which the weight limits 0-7½, 7½-15 and 15-22½ grammes are mentioned. I still look for an explanation for the 12½ grammes and the associated validity period. Or has the manufacturer made a mistake with this 12½ grammes? | rear of the scale |
