egg scale with oil damper | This is a special egg scale with oil damping. The scale was probably made in the Netherlands. It has no mark. On the internet I saw a copy which had a red colored name sticker on the vertical stand, just visible under the oil container. I asked the owner of this egg scale to give me the text and he did: G. Coenen & Sons, Groenstraat 15 Roggel, tel 4749 321. I do not know if this is the name of the maker or the name of a distributor. The motion damping is performed by a rectangular vane that moves along with the indicator arm as an oar in the oil-filled brass container. This oil container is placed behind the large sized chart and has the same curved shape. The oil slows down the movement, thereby, the egg weigher comes faster to a standstill, and can be read sooner. The scale in grams is from 47 to 83 grams. The base and stand are made of wood. The egg holder and the weighing arm are made of magnetic steel. The counterweight is made of brass. Also, the heavy, solid frame in which the main shaft is suspended is made of brass. The main shaft is qualitatively beautifully executed, the shaft ends as cones and the play is adjustable. I do not know what oil is used in this egg scale. In another oil-damped letter scale of the Royal Dutch Mail (PTT), see for example the J.S. Velthoen & Zn., brake fluid Vitrex 69 was used. I suppose Shell Tellus 30 or 40, or ordinary salad oil also will do the job and slow down the motion. | back of egg scale |
