paper scale, maker Jakob Maul | This paper scale is made by Jakob Maul from Germany. The model is number 670. A paper scale is used to measure the weight of paper per square meter. The applied fine-adjustment of the scale with the use three small counterweights a patent was applied for in 1951. The German patent DE899116 was granted only in 1953. On the enclosed leaflet of this scale is Pat. Ang. D.G.M. That is Gebrauchs Muster DE1635778U from 1952 and it is about the applied tapered bearings. This paper scale will therefore date to the period 1951-1952. The paper scale came with two aluminum templates for cutting out the test papers of 10x10 centimeters and two templates for cutting out test papers of 8x5 centimeters. This paper scale also was provided with a test weight of 1 gram: it is an aluminum strip with the inscription 100 g/m2 to be used to check the paper scale. The scale has two ranges: the lower from 0 up to 350 g/m2 with a graduation of 1:1 in the area of 0-200 and 2:1 from 200 up to 350 g/m2, and the upper scale ranges from 0 up to 900 g/m2, with a graduation of 5:1 from 0 up to 600 g/m2 and 10:10 from 600 up to 900 g/m2. The present firm Maul still produces a letter scale. The base of its frame is less beautiful, the leveling screw has a plastic knob and the scale is of aluminum and not of beautiful enamel. | back of paper scale |
