Perry & Co letter scale | This balance has the name Perry & Co., London. The firm Perry & Co. was a reseller of letter scales, they bought them for instance from Samuel Turner Senior (STS). The firm Perry & Co. was active under this name in England since 1866. More detailed information can be found on the pages of Grace's Guide on Perry and Co. The firm produced all kind of steel dip pens, nibs, writing equipment and such, chains for bicycles and motorcycles and such. Perry & Co. provided a comprehensive range of stationery and office supplies. the firm had branches in New York, Paris, Frankfurt and Brussels. Perry & Co. started September 1, 1866 a warehouse in Amsterdam, see the advert from the Opregte Haarlemsche Courant of November 19, 1866. Later they expanded to include among others Den Haag, Utrecht, Rotterdam, Groningen and Arnhem. Even earlier adverts were placed for pens of James Perry & Co, this was the name of the firm at that time, this showed an ad not depicted here in the Opregte Haarlemsche Courant of August 23, 1836. In the newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad of July 8, 1843 is also an advert for James Perry & Co., see below. | back of the scale |
Given the weights in grams this letter scale was made for the European market. The weights are 10g, 30g and 50g. I do not know if these are all the original weights, or is a weight of 15 grams missing. Therefore the dating is difficult without catalogs of Perry. The dimensions of the wooden base are 9 x 17 centimeters.
