pocket letter scale | This pocket letter scale was made for the Italian market. The front has the text: PESA LETTERE. This is Italian for letter scale. Also it has engraved No. 161926. I could not figure out whether this is a patent number. Also engraved at the front is: GRAMMI. This is Italian for grams. The indicated weighing values are 0 - 7½ - 10 - 15 - 20 - 30 and 50. The value 40 is only indicated by a stripe. The back of the letter scale is advertising: BOSCA VERMOUTH SPUMANTI. | checking the letter scale with a weight |
EXPOSITION UNIVERSELLE 1867 text. In France this 7½ grams postal rate limit was already changed to 10 grams per January 1, 1862. Therefore this letter scale is likely to have been invented before 1862. In mail traffic from France to Great Britain and from France to Prussia the 7½ grams and multiples thereof remained in use until 1875. I don't know how old my Bosca vermouth spumanti letter scale really is, it may be dating from after 1867. I'm not familiar with the old Italian postal rates. The diameter of the letter scale is 29 millimeters, the diameter of the 2 euros coin is 25.75 millimeters. Below some more pictures of this small letter scale.
