Lorjé Amsterdam letter scale
with Dutch postal rates

This letter scale was made by Jakob Maul from Zell in Germany. On the frame is written JMAZ, this is the abbreviation of Jakob Maul Aus Zell. (German meaning: Jakob Maul from Zell). The arm of the counter weight has the text: NIET VOOR HANDELSDOELEINDEN, this is Dutch meaning: not for commercial purposes.
The clued scale with the Dutch postal rates was made separately for Lorjé from Amsterdam. Lorjé was an office bookstore, a stationery, founded by Abraham Willem Lorjé. The inland letter rates were valid in the short period between November 1, 1957 and December 1, 1960. The postal rates for mail by ship to Suriname, Netherlands Antilles, New Guinea, Indonesia, and to Belgium and Luxembourg and to the remaining foreign countries are present. The categories are: Postcards - Letters - Printed matter - Samples. I don't know whether there are Lorjé copies of earlier or later postal periods.
The weighing range of this letter scale is 250 grams. Up to 150 grams each gram has its stripe of measure, this is a bit too much. From 150 to 250 grams the scale is subdivided per five grams.
