Bull Dog Letter Balance | This letter scale is made by Setton & Durwood from Birmingham in England and was sold with the name Bull Dog, see the photos of the packaging box. This postal scale was presented here before with the name Criterion. The name and trademark Criterion is here also present in very small characters in the logo at the top of the scale of measurements. At the box and at the bottom the scale is stated this Letter Balance or Postal Scale is British Manufacture. The scale is subdivided into half ounces and into parts of English Pound. The weighing range is 16 ounces either 1 Lb (= Libra Pound, also called Imperial Pound = 453,6 gram). The Registered Design number 583703 is stamped in the base. This design number dates from 1911 according to the list British Design Registrations which Michael Crawforth presented in his Handbook of old weighing instruments. The Bull Dog of the cover drawing is standing on a square top plate, in reality the top plate is round. I don't know if this square top plate ever existed. | back of the scale |
