Black Forest bear with letter scale | Of these wood-carved bears, it is usually said that they originate from the Black Forest in Germany. Sometimes they are referred to as Bear from Brienz, Brienz is a place much further south in Switzerland. There are various versions, a letter scale with a sitting bear, with or without a tree stump like here, with a standing bear, with a bear lying on the back. The letter scales weigh up to 50 grams, or up to 60 grams or up to 100 grams. Sometimes something more can be said about the age looking at the scale mechanism. There are, for example, self-adjusting scales, which are more recent. An assembled and bolted main hinge, as here, is the oldest scale implementation. This letter scale weighs up to 50 grammes, for the French-speaking customers, and it has a stripe per five grams. Only between ten and twenty grams the subdivision is per gram. This bear with letter scale has no zero set screw. On other versions of the bear with letter scale, sometimes a zero set screw is added. | back of the bear and the scale |
