household scale by E. Ubrig & Co. | This household scale is made by Emil Ubrig from Berlin in Germany. This scale is only described in an English patent with number 1478 granted on December 4, 1897. I don't know a German patent with this scale. On a not yet faded enamel scale of this scale is on the left D.R.G.M. that is the abbreviation for Deutsches Reich Gebrauchs Muster and on the right is D.R.P.A. that is the abbreviation for Deutsche Reich Patent Angemeldet. The history of Ubrig is extensively described in Mass und Gewicht Nr. 49, March 1999, pp. 1178-1187 and in Mass und Gewicht Nr. 50, June 1999, pp. 1198-1204 in the article Die Ubrig'sche Waagenfabrik in Berlin (Charlottenburg) und ihre Blattfeder-Wirtschaftswaagen by Johannes Lindner. Waagenfabrik Ubrig has been relatively short since 1882. From 1884 as E. Ubrig & Co. In 1891 the English scales manufacturer George Salter took over the company. In 1907 that acquired company was discontinued. Emil Ubrig started again his own factory in 1892 under the name Emil Ubrig. That was abolished in 1902. After that, his wife Louise continued the firm and made the Union kitchen scale until around 1905. Emil Ubrig lived from August 18, 1844 to July 9, 1905. In Mass und Gewicht Nr. 54, June 2000, pp. 1298-1305, is an article by Johannes Lindner with the title Emil Ubrig nach 1891 und seine Witschaftswaage "UNION". The household scale shown here is also discussed. Previously in Mass und Gewicht Nr. 26, June 1993, pp. 595 and 602 this scale is depicted as Parcel Post parcel scale. In Mass und Gewicht Nr. 27, September 1993, on pp. 644 the Ubrig's System Union scale with the original large dish is shown. That dish is missing from my copy, but the supplied replacement copper bowl fits well. Also in Equilibrium 1983 No. 4, pp. 622-623 the Parcel Post version is discussed and depicted. The weighing range on the upper scale goes up to 10 kilograms, on the lower up to 20 pounds. | back of the scale |
