Parnell letter scale | This letter scale is also referred to as "gooseneck", the similarity with the neck of a goose is obvious. The original is a letter scale design made by Nathaniel Richard Hall, on which a British patent No. 791 was granted already in 1863 (source: Equilibrium, winter 1979/80, Patently interesting, by Michael A. Crawforth, pp. 198-199). The letter scale shown here was sold by Parnell from London. I don't know whether Parnell was the maker. The name and location are engraved on the back of the scale. The weighing range is 4 ounces. Per ½ ounce a stripe of measure is given and in addition the value ¼ ounce also has a stripe. The English domestic letter post rates are listed under the weights on the scale. It is the letter post rate of the period from April 1, 1865 to October 5, 1871. Parts of the letter scale are engraved with floral decorations. In December 1989, the German brewery Jacob Stauder released a silver-plated replica of a heavily decorated Parnell letter scale bearing the postal rates of the earlier period from January 10, 1840 to April 1, 1865, see this Parnell - Hall's patent letter scale. | back of the letter scale |
