Jakob Maul letter scale | This letter scale was made by Jakob Maul. The JM mark is placed in the tin vertical standard of the black frame. The frame is a combination of cast iron and tin parts. The base of the three legged frame is made in cast iron. I don't know until what year this type of frame with these distinguishing rounded edges was produced. The indicator is made by partly cutting out a part of the vertical standard and then by folding. The parts of the mechanism are made of brass. The chart is steel. To facilitate scale reading the front of the chart is painted in cream. This paint is not intended to prevent corrosion, in that case the back of the chart would have been painted also. The parts of the frame and of the mechanism are joined by rivets. The characters D.R.G.M. are stamped at the back of the horizontal brass strip. | back of letter scale |

This is the abbreviation of Deutsches Reich Gebrauchs Muster, a model registration quicker and cheaper than a patent registration. With the DRGM-number a date or period could be attached to this scale, unfortunately the number is not given on the scale. The range is 500 grams. A stripe per 5 grams is given in the total range. Below some more photos of this letter scale.
