letter balance with unequal arms

This letter scale is a balance with unequal arms with a movable counterweight. This scale type is called a steelyard. The range is four ounces in half-ounce increments. The value ¼ ounce is also the first measurement value and recess on the long arm of the balance. The value zero is missing. The unit of measure ounce is indicated with the abbreviation oz. The readings are only on one side of the weighing arm. There is no brand or logo on this balance. The parts are made of brass, except for the knife edge shaft, which is made of non-magnetic steel. The mahogany base measures 185 by 95 millimeters. The highest point of the scale is the top of the movement-limiting upright at 125 millimeters. The scale is a somewhat simple version of the scale model that was made in more luxurious versions, especially with the Avery brand.
