Oakes #555 egg scale | This Oakes #555 egg scale was made by The Oakes Mfg. Co., of Tipton, Indiana, U.S.A .. The name and location of the maker are embossed into the base plate. The base plate was originally painted red, but this paint has almost completely disappeared. These Oakes were sold packaged in a cardboard box from 1933 onwards. [Source: North American Egg Scales by Charley Amsbaugh]. This egg scale consists of six parts. The parts are made of rusting magnetic steel, only the rotary knob is made of brass. I replaced the steel axle with a brass one. The Oakes #555 is an egg scale with an easy to release and to lock sliding counterweight. The scale can be quickly set to different egg weight grades. This scale has the values 18, 20, 22, 23, 24, and 26 pressed into the beam. Those are the weights in ounces per dozen eggs. Converted, the 18oz per dozen equates to a 1.5 ounce egg, which is 42.5 grams. | the egg scale is precisely in balance with this egg |
The 26oz per dozen equates to 2.17 ounces of egg, which is 61.4 grams. The current US egg weight classes Extra Large (XL) = 27 (that's per egg = 2.25oz = 64 grams) and Jumbo = 30 (that's per egg = 2.5oz = 71 grams) are out of the range of this Oakes egg scale. Apparently the eggs in the past generally were smaller.
