This egg scale with the name MASCOT EGG GRADER was made by Prospectus Manufacturing Company, from Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S.A. The original color of the Mascot egg scale is off-white. This can still be seen on the bottom, see the middle photo at the bottom of this page. The paint layer is damaged on most copies. Sometimes the egg scale has been given an all-aluminium appearance because all the remaining paint has been removed. My copy is painted light green. The sticker comes from an egg packaging and does not belong on an original Mascot egg scale. Other copies have MASCOT EGG GRADER in letters on the scale housing below the viewing window. That too is not original. An original scale housing is painted off-white, without any sticker, and is without text or logo. I've seen different colors of scale housings: dark green, very light blue, cream, off-white, and aluminum. The egg carton sticker or the Mascot egg grader lettering were featured on most of these repainted and recolored specimens.
This model of egg scale is sometimes called the parking meter. With some knowledge of the parking history this is understandable.
The scale name and maker are on the dial. The top scale of measurement goes from 18 to 30 ounces per dozen eggs, or actually 16 to 32 ounces per dozen eggs. The lower size scale goes from 1½ to 2½ ounces per egg. Below the measurements scale it says: Made IN USA.According to the egg scale book North American Egg Scales by Charley Amsbaugh the scale housing is made of pot metal, this is a mixed bag of metals with a low melting point, quick and easy and therefore cheap to process. Elsewhere, aluminum is mentioned as a material for the scale housing. There would also be a turkey egg version with a scale of 30 to 42 ounces per dozen, respectively 2½ to 3½ ounces per egg. This Mascot egg grader was advertised in 1931 and 1932.
