This egg scale is used to sort eggs by weight classes. The classification is the American-Canadian way, which is in ounces per dozen eggs. The classes are 18, 20, 22 and 24. The original design was by Alfred William Cook and William Allen and was patented in Canada on December 5, 1922 with patent number CA226,712. The patent figures are below. The photographed egg scale is of a more recent date and is even simpler. There is no fine adjustment and the counterweight is not rotatable suspended but fixed on the weighing arm. The egg classes are printed on the wooden base plate and also a brief instruction manual. A company name has been scratched out. Similar copies bear the company name Hiram L. Piper Co., Limited, 555 St Remi St. Montreal. Charley Amsbaugh in his book North American Egg Scales mentions the ABC egg scale from 1922 as the first scale based on this patent. The Piper egg scale dates from about 1952.

In the early 1960s, Hiram L. Piper Co. Ltd. made another version with a metal base plate. A company name is largely illegibly stamped on the underside of the wooden base plate, but the place name Saskatoon, Saskatchewan is still legible. Below some more pictures of this Canadian egg scale.
