Brower egg scale | This special American egg grader is suitable for weighing eggs from both chickens and turkeys. The egg scale was made by Brower Mfg. Co., of Quincy in Illinois, U.S.A. The chicken egg sizing scale has four weight classes: small - medium - large - extra large and ranges from 18 ounces per dozen to 30 ounces per dozen. The weight per egg is also stated on the scale, for the chicken it goes from 1½ to 2½ ounce (from 43 to 71 grams per egg). The turkey egg sizing scale also has four weight classes: small - medium - large - extra large and ranges from 30 ounces per dozen to 42 ounces per dozen. The weight per egg is also stated on the measuring scale, for the turkey it goes from 2½ to 3½ ounce (from 71 to 99 grams per egg). The Brower has an adjustable movement stop to shorten the weighing time and a vertical pointer to position the egg scale as horizontally as possible. The original movement stop and the vertical pointer were missing. These parts were made by me on the basis of photos to show a complete egg scale. According to Charley Amsbaugh in his book North American Egg Scales, the Brower egg grader was sold as late as 1948. From when to when exactly is unclear, presumably from about 1936. The scale is 16 cm high, the dimensions of the base plate are 16.6 x 8.3 cm. | back of the egg scale |
