torsion balance, maker The Torsion Balance Co. | This torsion balance is made by The Torsion Balance Company, from New York in the U.S.A. It is a large and heavy scale in a wooden box. The whole weighs no less than 9.2 kilograms. On the bottom of the box of this copy is a plumb plane that says NEW. YORK, MAD, 1939. This type is probably much older, probably from around 1900. As early as August 15, 1882, Alfred Springer and Frederick A. Roeder were granted a patent entitled Beam-Scale. In it the torsion wires are round, here in this type 258 it is a flat wire that provides the torsion forces. | back of the torsion balance |
