letter scale marked A.C. v. Rijn, den Haag | On the brass measuring scale of this large letter scale the name A.C. v. Rijn, den Haag is written in an oval at the top left. This was probably the user of the letter scale and not the maker. In Meten en Wegen No. 151 from September 2010, the pages 3597-3599 contain an article by Rein Kok with the title Een brievenweger van Kipp uit Delft (Translated: A letter scale by Kipp from Delft). The 200 gram letter scale described therein has the name P.J. Kipp & Zn. Delft and J.W. Giltay Opv.. And that combination of names was used from 1887 to 1916. In addition, a nameless and unbranded scale of 1000 grams is described, this scale is also attributed to Kipp from Delft. In the book Weegwerktuigen of the Staatsbedrijf der Posterijen, Telegrafie en Telefonie, for short the PTT (The Dutch state-owned Postal, Telegraph and Telephony Company), the image section contains this letter scale in figure 131. This book compiled by J.N. Bosch dates from 1962. No maker or brand is mentioned in the description. These scales are said to have been used by the PTT until 1950. I saw another copy on the internet, the owner replied that it was marked with RIJKSMUNT. | back of the letter scale |
