This is a special model of spring scale. This appears to have been made by the company Kind & and Cie. from Wald, a town located in Rheinland, Solingen in Germany. This company was founded in 1905 and has a fish as its logo. I came across an image of this spring unster in the price list of Kind & and Cie. from around 1910, the scale is called Rationswaage in German and is according to the ,,System Kind’’. That price list has a receipt stamp with the date August 31, 1913. There is no printed date in the price list itself. Elsewhere on the internet, at this page of the site of Vitaly Tomchik at the bottom you will find a letter stating that the Klein company bought the fish logo around 1910 and from then on started making pocket scales and Ration scales. It is unclear whether this model was also made by Klein. Mr Hermann Klein of the Waagenfabrik of the same name explains the name Rationswaage: the higher range is for bales of straw, the lower range is for weighing certain portions for an animal. This old spring scale is completely unsuitable for weighing letters individually, but a well-filled heavy mail bag can be weighed with it.
The scale length is 27 centimeters, the width 7 cm and the thickness 3.3 cm. The net weight is 290 grams.
Below are some more images of this special spring scale.
