letter & parcel scale Salter model 701 up to 2kg
This large scale with the scale housing dimensions 33.4 x 26.7 x 17.8 centimeters, with a weighing platform of 31.6 x 19.9 cm, and a total height of 35.0 cm, weighs no less than 9.6 kilograms. The scale was made by Salter Industrial Measurement Limited, of Broseley, Shropshire, in England. The dial shows the weighing range of 2 kg and is subdivided by 5 grams. The dial also shows the Registered Design numbers 952533/4/5, I have not seen them yet. There are a few specifics. At the bottom left of the scale housing, an aluminum part has been added with a round spirit level to check whether the scale is level and a plumb surface to apply a verification mark, see the photos. There are four! adjustable feet to adjust the position if desired. The spirit level is at the bottom left but just in sight. The pointer can be set to zero via an adjustment knob that is centrally located on top of the scale housing; a cylindrical pin is required for adjustment. The weighing mechanism is rock solid, has ball bearings, and the pinion of the hardened rack also runs in ball bearings. The scale has a pneumatic damper to stop the movement faster. The scale springs are made of a nickel-iron-chromium alloy, which provides a constant modulus of elasticity between minus 45 and plus 65 degrees Celsius, making the scale virtually independent of temperature. The scale housing is made of aluminum. The center track is finished with black vinyl. The parts of the weighing mechanism are made of galvanized and passivated steel. What is striking is the second indicator already present inside at the back of the scale. Model 701 can be found in a Salter catalog from 1982. According to the accompanying price list for the Netherlands, the price including the 18% VAT of that time was no less than 1986.71 NLG, or converted into euros € 901.53.
