letter scale with sphere and tripod | On the auction site photo of this letter scale I noticed a spherical counterweight, a tripod, and a strange position of the scale. The design of the pointer was not clearly visible. In short, I bought the letter scale out of curiosity. The scale, see the edited auction site photo, appeared to barely move due to rust, dirt and deterioration. The cast iron of this letter scale was rusted, the brass was badly tarnished, and an indicating wire was missing. With the help of WD-40, the various screws were made rotatable and disassembly was successful. All parts have been cleaned and the cast iron stand with tripod and the spherical counterweight have been painted black. The brass parts have been polished to a shine and a new reading wire has been made. This letter scale has a solid, heavy-duty cast iron frame. To clamp the indicator wire, two pillars have been cast for the mounting screws. The main pivot is mounted on one side in the cast iron upright, and on the other side in a large brass block that is screwed on top of the upright. | back of the letter scale |
