letter balance fixed in box | The maker and country of origin of this letter balance are unknown to me. The balance is secured to the bottom of the wooden box with four screw bolts. The screw heads protrude from the bottom of the box. The lid of the box can be secured with fasteners on the sides. The inside of the bottom is lined with red velvet. Probably there were loose weights originally. The balance parts are not really robust. The rectangular plates are made of 0.5 millimeter thick brass. The folded edges provide a stiffer and more dimensionally stable weighing part. Striking are the folded hinge ears that are made in one piece with the letter plates. | back of the letter balance |
