![]() candlestick letter scale, maker Edmund Ratcliff | These letter scales are called candlesticks because of their shape. There were two major English manufacturers, namely Robert Walter Winfield and the brothers Joseph and Edmund Ratcliff. Both firms were located in Birmingham. The Ratcliff brothers are already listed in the trade register of 1834. In 1862 Joseph died and Edmund continued alone until 1881. (Source: EQM 1, 1982, Brian Brass). This candlestick only has Edmund's name on it, which probably makes the short period of manufacture 1862-1881. The name on the candlestick is hard to read, it says MANUFACTURED BY at the bottom and EDMD RATCLIF underneath, with only one F. I seriously doubt whether RATCLIFF was ever on it. This is one of the reasons why it is a special specimen. | ![]() back of the candlestick |
