![]() inkstand with letter scale | This inkwell set with letter scale is an unknown, rare example. The inkwells are missing a sealing lid or stopper. There is a mark on the metal rim of the inkwells; it is unclear whether it reads 525 or 925 over a symbol resembling a small sword. The metal is not magnetic; it seems too shiny for silver, to me. The letter scale is an old German model with a letter plate displaying German postal rates, for local printed matter from the short period of April 1, 1900 to July 1, 1906. The weighing range is 50 grams. The sides of the wooden base are cast of an unknown metal and painted gold. A crowned lion with a shield is visible, along with some ornate leaves and a flower. The wooden base features a lowering for pens and a decorative brass bead strip. Veneer covers the top surface and the sides of the wooden base. Here and there, missing pieces of veneer have been replaced with liquid wood. The base is 23.5 centimeters long and 8.7 cm wide. The letter plate is 14.0 cm high and 5.2 cm in diameter. The whole thing looks like a hodgepodge combination. | ![]() back of the ink set with the letter scale |
