Avery letter scale

William Avery became the owner of a weighing scale company in 1813 following the death of his cousin. Together with his brother Thomas Avery, he continued the business. From 1818 onwards, it operated under the company name W & T Avery. It remained a family business for a long time; in 1894, it became W. and T. Avery Ltd. From 1900, branches were also established abroad, and other weighing scale manufacturers were acquired. For example, in 1913, Henry Pooley and Son and Parnall and Sons were acquired. In 1922, De Grave, Short and Co. also joined the group. In 1979, the Avery group was acquired by General Electric Company (GEC). In 1993, Berkel was acquired by GEC and subsequently merged into Avery-Berkel. In 2000, Weigh-Tronix purchased the Avery-Berkel company, and the business was given a new name: Avery Weigh-Tronix. On the letter scale shown here, the name AVERY appears on the left, thus without both initials W. & T. On the right is WARRANTED ACCURATE, which means: GUARANTEED ACCURATE. This suggests something, but in fact means nothing.

The number 25 is stamped on the inside of the rear balance arm. The name AVERY is also found on the underside of the upper central connecting strip of the fixed frame. Precise dating is not possible, but a letter scale with this fixed frame model appears in the 1916 Avery catalog, with No. 371. The model shown there has, as was more common, three recesses for the weights; see the image at the bottom of this page. The 1903 Avery catalog already lists a letter scale with number 371 ("brass letter weigher for private use"), but it really does not resemble the letter scale No. 371 from 1916. The balance has a well-fitting set of weights. The weights are 1 oz, 2 oz, 4 oz, 8 oz, and 1 lb. The recess for the weights has a felt lining. The scale rests on four donut-shaped feet under which a previous owner has glued rubber discs.
The scale base is 28.0 x 16.0 centimeters, the weight plate is 8.7 cm round, the letter plate is 11.2 x 13.9 cm. The letter scale is 14.7 cm high.
