old tall letter scale | This is a tall robust letter scale of Philipp Jakob Maul. the M-mark is at the cover plate of the main pivot. The frame with a pattern of fish-scales is made of cast iron. Below the zero position a protuberance of the frame acts as a stop. Beyond the ranges of 250 and 1000 grams, the plateau is stopped at the upper side of the frame near the main pivot. The letter scale has a turn-over counterweight and a fixed stagnant enameled chart. With the counterweight in the lower position the 1000 grams chart is in use. With the counterweight in the upper position the 250 grams chart is in use. The letter scale has a big zero leveling screw. The chart is enamel. This letter scale is pictured in several old catalogs of different! firms. | rear view |
Ordering of several different versions was possible: brass nickel-plated, brass pickled, black lacquered or finest quality nickel-plated. The model was available in five combined ranges: 50g / 250g; 60g / 350g; 100g / 500g; 250g / 1000g; and 500g /2000g. The charts of the lower range are largely, or totally, divided per gram. The other, higher ranges are subdivided per 5 grams. The plate was available in different models: round and flat, round with a lowering, a modest saucer, a tall bowl or pan, et cetera. At the chart one reads DEP., this is presumably an abbreviation of Déposée. This suggests a registration or otherwise legally filing. Also the chart reads Grm., this is short for Gram. Below some more photos of this tall letter scale.
