Salter letter scale | This letter scale is made by George Salter & Co. Ltd., West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England. The scale has the number 11 on the dial. The mechanism is according to an old design. It was patented already in January 1867 by John Silvester. I don't know since what year this chrome version with plain housing assembled of cast iron parts, was produced. The capacity is 24 ounces, per ¼ ounce a stripe of measure is given. The dial has the English postal rates for letters at the inside of the full circle. This rate of 2½D till 2 oz., 3D till 4 oz and 3½D till 6 oz. was valid in the period May 1 1940 till May 1 1952. Also versions with a rectangled plate exist, the plate of this specimen is circular. Besides this beautiful brass dial, also white lacquered and enamelled versions exist. | back of the scale |
This housing is chrome plated. Also lacquered versions do exist, for instance gold-brown and green. Below some more pictures of this Salter letter scale.
