Jakob Maul weger | The mark of Jakob Maul is at the back of the cast iron frame part. It is a compiled frame. It exists largely of folded tin. The frame has a characteristic little bend in the horizontal and in the vertical part. The layer of black lacquer is very thin, especially at the back. The chart is enameled. The letter scale has a turn-over counterweight. The short turn-over bar is painted red. This letter scales has two ranges: from 0 to 250 grams and from 0 to 1000 grams. The counterweight has to be turned over to the lower position to use the higher range. This model exists also in lighter ranges: 100g / 500grams and a 50g / 250grams version. The plate is available in different forms, for example an aluminum pan, easy removable from the holder. | achterkant van de weger |
Of more recent specimens, the cast iron turnable foot is replaced by a version made of bended steel strip. Probably, because one occasionally sees letter scales with a cast iron foot broken in half. Of specimens of an even younger age, the enameled chart is succeeded by a thin, less appealing, aluminum version. Up to 200 grams, this letter scale has a division stripe for each gram at the chart of 250 grams. Above 200 grams, one stripe per 10 grams is given. The 1000 grams chart has one stripe per ten grams. Every zone of twenty grams is divided in half by a chequered band at the lower edge of the chart. Below some more photos of this letter scale.
