letter scale | This model already is fairly old. It is in old catalogs of Philipp Jakob Maul and also of Gottlieb Kern. This specimen has -and to me that's odd- the mark of Jakob Maul. The letter scale has two ranges: 0 up to 50 grams and 0 up to 250 grams. The counterweight has to be in the lower position in order to use the higher range. The chart is enameled. The striping and numerals are simple and clear. The chart has the abbreviation DEP. Probably this is short for Déposée, suggesting that the model is registered or otherwise legally laid down. also Grm. is written on the chart, this is short for Gram. The date of this letter scale is not clear, neither is it clear whether this an original or a replica. | back-side of letter scale |

The chart of 50 grams shows a division stripe each gram. the 250 grams chart has stripes per five grams and a numeral per each fifty grams. The plate is round and flat. Below some more photos of this letter scale.
