scale weighing a letter | There is no mark on this pocket letter scale. It was delivered together with a leather case and a rate card. At the bottom edge of the rate card the firm: Rudson-Wood Inc., N.Y.C. is stated. It is a pocket letter scale aimed at the North American market (USA + Canada). The domestic rate for a letter is 3 cent per oz. This applied also to Canada, according to the card. The rate of 3c per oz. dates from the period 1932 till 1958. American and canadian army personnel probably received this little letter scale. The rate card separately gives the rate for mail of the United States Armed Forces. The range of the scale is 2 oz. (about 56 grams). The clip for the letters is made beautifully by wire-bending. | scale in use |
The leather case has the gold-colored imprint: LETTER SCALE. The scale is chromed. Every area of half an ounce is subdivided into ten parts. Numerals are given at each half an ounce. The unit of measurement is stated also. The point of the indicator is painted red. Below some more detailed photos.
