wall letter scale, Ph.J. Maul | This wall letter scale was created by Philipp Jakob Maul of Hamburg in Germany. The M logo of Ph.J. Maul is found on the back of the swivel arm on which the counterweight is attached. The original wooden board for wall mounting is missing and the brass screw of the counterweight is missing as well. The original brass screw has a large knob for easy finger gripping to swivel the counterweight from one to the other load range. Both missing parts were replaced. the weighing ranges are 250 and 1000 grams. The scale of 250 is subdivided per gram, this results in really a great number of stripes very close together. The scale of 1000 grams is subdivided per 5 grams. Reading takes place along the red-painted window frame. I don't know the exact date of the first wall letter scale made by Ph.J. Maul. This wall letter scale is on the large poster of Ph.J. Maul products from approx. 1921. The more normal version of this letter scale, standing on a surface, see for instance letter scale with curl is already shown in the Ph.J. Maul catalog of 1909. On the poster the wall letter scale has the Ph.J. Maul number 320/1000. | rear of frame part |
The same wall letter scale is in a brochure of the representative in the Netherlands of the company Jakob Maul: B. Sprenkeling from Amsterdam, dated to the twenties. There this wall letter scale has the number 603 below the image. With a typewriter is added to the brochure that the order number is 632/1000 gr.. This numbering is again found in a Sprenkeling catalog of Jakob Maul office products dated to the thirties. Probably the Jakob Maul wall letter scales originated from Ph.J. Maul. The abbreviation D.R.G.M. on both images stands for Deutsches Reich Gebrauchs Muster. This is a model registration, quicker and cheaper than a patent registration. I haven't traced those DRGM documents yet.
