magnetic cushion letter scale | This letter scale was designed as a kit by Klaus Hünig from Germany in 1996. The kits were intended for use in schools, in the science classes or in the crafts classes. During some time the letter scale kit was available in several European countries from the firm Opitec. The crafts pack was delivered complete with clear assembly instructions. The letter scale is build from acrylic glass. The circular parts are sawn out of a sheet and finished by using files and sand paper. Where necessary, the parts are connected with transparent glue. Four ring shaped magnets are arranged so that they repel each other. The magnets are strung on an acrylic glass rod. The top plate is glued on a transparent tube part. This tube fits smoothly on the rod. By loading the scale with 0g, 20g, 50g and 100g a measuring scale is marked on the tube at the successive positions of the rod-end face. For ease of reading I applied self-adhesive figures and clearly visible stripes. The free upper end of the rod is painted red, for ease of reading. | magnet cushion letter scale |
The lower end of the rod is clued together with the bottom magnet and the acrylic glass disc which acts as base. I build a number of letter scales with measuring scales in grams and ounces. A nice variation is the egg scale. Below several pictures of the letter scale.
