letter scale, maker Salter
Dutry Colson Pèse Lettres

This Salter & Co. No. 11 is especially made for the Belgian department store Dutry Colson in Ghent (Gand). The French word for letter scale is on top of the dial: Pèse Lettres. On the bottom half of the dial are the Belgian postal rates:
                                                Interieur 10 c par 15 Gram
Hollande et Luxembourg 20 c par 15 Gram
                                                Union postale universelle
                                                25 c par 15 Gram.
Based on old Belgian postal rates this letter scale dates from the very short period May 1, 1875 - June 19 1876. More detailed information was presented in an article in Equilibrium 2008, No.2, pp. 3367-3368 written by me, André Sol: The Dating of a Particular Salter Letter Scale. This Dutry Colson letter scale lacks the distinctive mark of Salter. The beautiful mail red color is very likely not the original color. The dial on the right has been broken and provisionally repaired. Other Salter No. 11 postal scales have been previously shown, see No. 11 for further information and referrals.
