egg and letter scale, unknown maker
letter scale also suitable as egg scale

This letter scale is also good to use as egg scale thanks to the egg-shaped lowering in the top plate. The scale is from France and has the typical French weighing range of 350 grams. In a French regulation of June 26, 1906 it was forbidden to sell scales with a range over 350 grams without state approval. It was therefore obliged to calibrate scales with capacity over 350 grams.
This weighing scale has a stripe of measure per each gram from zero up to 20 grams. Above this up to 350 grams a stripe per each five grams is given. The design of this letter scale has been described several times before, see for more information at this page full circle letter scale and the links mentioned on the page. At this full circle-page, and also on a photo below, there are four slightly different models lined up. The scale mmeasures in grams and has no special markings dor egg weight classes. The full circle scale has a red colored zone this visually warns when crossing the letter postal rate limit of 20 grams. From when this version with the egg dimple dates back exactly, I still don't know. In the Testut catalog of 1926 and also that of 1931 this letter scale is indeed shown but still without the special egg dimple. The patent of the letter scale with similar frame but without the egg dimple dates from 1922. I have not found an image of this egg-scale version in a catalog.
Below some more pictures of this egg- and letter scale.
