Rowenta letter scale, Germany
red Rowenta letter scale with stamp box

This letter scale is mounted on a transparent glass plate together with a stamp box with three compartments. The height of the letter scale itself is just 8 centimeters. It was intended for the German market given the designation GRAMM. The weighing range is 100 Gramm. There is a stripe of measure per each 5 grams. Per 10 grams there are numbers. The left part of the scale is equal to the right part. This letter scale has strikingly patterns in red on the sides and on the letter plate. The lid of the stamp box has a glass window.
In Equilibrium, 1989 no. 3 at page 1263, figure 24 presents a similar little scale. Below at the back of the scale house is the brand name Rowenta. This brand name exists since 1913. The name ROWENTA is an acronym of the founders name RObert WEiNTrA. See for example bijvoorbeeld here for a similar letter scale of Weintraud with patterns in blue. In the journal of the German collectors Maß & Gewicht, No.102, juni 2012, at pp.2559-2560 there is an article: Briefwaagen von ROWENTA? written by Rudolf Wantoch. He dates the production of Rowenta scales to the period 1925-1935.
